The increasingly ubiquitous connectivity of not only individuals but also devices is opening up a myriad of applications in various vertical markets for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, notably through big data and analytics. The cloud, which is used to make all this growth economically scalable, can also be leveraged to maximize environmental benefits in terms of not only energy efficiency but also in terms of mitigation of carbon and other polluting emissions. This however requires an integrated approach to the design of telecommunications and energy infrastructures. This presentation will address how the combination of digital economy strategies and energy production and distribution policies (e.g. with the smart grid, electrification of transport, etc.) can be a compelling driver of the triple bottom line of sustainability with economic, environmental and social benefits.
