IT Research Trends and Educational Programs at the Saudi Leading University for Building A Knowledge Based Society

   One major obstacle impeding computerization and industrialization in developing countries is the lack of advanced research institutions and low support for innovative research in technological and information fields. In order to fulfill Saudi Arabia country's developmental objectives, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has endeavored ambitus plans to reorganize and improve its academic and research systems. One leading Saudi university that has undergone profound change and significant progress in building research institutions and international research cooperation programs is King Saud University (KSU) at Riyadh , Saudi Arabia . New comprehensive research support programs, and numerous advanced research centers and institutes , have been created and implemented in recent years. Research institutes for Nanotechnology , Health Sciences , Engineering Materials and center of Excellence in Biotechnology , Information Assurance , Sustainable Energy Technologies are samples of these new institutions. International Program for distinguished Research Scholarships to attract the best international graduate students was introduced. New Scientific research chairs initiatives, International Twinning Program, Nobel Laureates Program, Distinguished Scholars Fellowship Program , Intellectual Property Rights Program are also implemented to encourage research and scientific cooperation with outstanding universities, institutes, and research centers worldwide. This keynote speech will discuss the new research trends and philosophy, the vigorous KSU research national and international programs , and a brief summary of the university concrete accomplishments in the research frontier. It is believed that the KSU research advancement's innovative approach can serve as a structural model and example for programs in other countries undergoing rapid IT and technology advancement, and for universities and technical colleges with similar educational and research needs. .

Biography of Pr. Sami S. Alwakeel

   Pr. Sami S. Alwakeel has an M Sc. & Ph.D. Degrees from department of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University, U.S.A. He is a professor at the Department of Computer Engineering, College of Computer & information sciences (CCIS) , King Saud University (KSU) , Riyadh , Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). He was a founding member and previously he was the dean of college of computer & Information sciences at KSU. Prof. Sami worked as a consultant to many Saudi private companies and government ministries and contributed to the development of various IT sectors at the kingdom. In education field, he contributed to the establishment of many computer colleges and departments in KSA and to the development of its IT curricula. Prof. Alwakeel has several patent awarded by US patent office and is an author for more than seventy journal and articles on computer networks and information technology. He is also an editor for several books on sensor networks and a co-author for several text books for in computer science and computer networks.
